Pathways Recovery Blog Post Examines Rise of Alcohol-Related ER Visits in CA

Roseville, Calif. — Pathways Recovery, an addiction treatment center located near Sacramento, Calif., recently published a blog article that points out alcohol-related emergency room visits are steadily increasing in California. These alcohol-related ER visits are also on the rise throughout the country, and they include both critical and non-critical cases that often result in admissions for further treatment.
The article cites a published report that alcohol-related ER visits for 2014 across the United States were 61% higher than in 2006. That backs up a study that was done by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development that showed California emergency department visits were up a substantial 67% from 2008 to 2017. The most worrisome data from these studies is that those visiting ERs for alcohol-related health issues are staying longer for treatments.
More young people than ever before, ages 18-25, have been visiting ER rooms for alcohol-associated ailments. In this same younger age group, 54% of those surveyed confirmed their use of alcohol while an eye-catching 36% reported episodes of binge drinking. Among those 26 years of age and older, 54% drink alcohol and only 24% mentioned that they binge drink.
According to the Pathways Recovery article, the number of alcohol-related ER visits is more than double the number of ER visits for any other type of substance misuse. Professionals cited a number of possible reasons alcohol-related ER incidents are going up, including increasingly accepted societal norms regarding alcohol use; the ease of access to beverages containing alcohol; the country’s often changing attitude toward alcohol consumption; and broader social, economic, and cultural factors for women. However, experts have no definite answer as to why alcohol-related hospital admissions or ER visits are rising.
The article also points out that 93% of people that fall into the category of those who misuse alcohol never seek treatment for this problem. The article identifies two main ways those struggling with addiction can get the help they need. This includes better methods for identifying the groups that need treatment and better resources to get people who need alcohol-related help connected to professional treatment facilities.
Those in the Sacramento area that need help with alcohol dependence and related health issues can get the treatment they need at Pathways Recovery.
